It has been going on for years. College- bound students and their parents continually get defrauded by scholarship scammers…people who promise to help them land scholarships and financial aid they wouldn't otherwise receive.

It is widely believed that these scammers defraud families out of more than $100 million dollars every academic year.

They do it by preying on families worried about the cost of college: families who have never been through the financial aid process before and thus know little or nothing about it.

The scammers first send students a letter using a company with a name that makes it sound like a benign organization dedicated to helping students maximize their financial aid awards.

The letter often looks like it comes from a top college or university. That is in no way an accident. The font size, the high grade letterhead, and even the company logo are chosen by the scammers to give the letter an "academic look". It is the very worst kind of junk mail, but that isn't what it appears to be. As a result, instead of throwing the letter away, most families open it. That's their first mistake.

The letters almost always start by appealing to fear by talking about the high cost of college.

But, the letter says, we can help you get the financial aid you will need. We can teach you how to receive more financial aid than you would ever get on your own. In some instances, the letters will mention "secrets" colleges don't want you to know. Sometimes the letters will talk about millions of dollars in unused scholarships and financial aid; money just waiting to be found by students who know the ropes.

The letters conclude with an invitation to attend a seminar or information session, usually at a hotel not far from your home. Because the letter offers the promise of increased financial aid, and because there is no charge to attend, many students and their parents show up to learn more. That is their second mistake.

Ultimately, attendees are subject to a group sales pitch for the company's services. The pitches are not exactly the same, but all promise that their services will result in students receiving more money for college. And, none tell you that everything they offer is either unnecessary or can be gotten elsewhere at no cost.

The group pitch is followed by individual meetings with people who are referred to in the sales profession as "one call closers". Although they may call themselves counselors, they are anything but. Their job is to pressure families into immediately writing checks that may exceed $1,000 for an essentially worthless set of services…and they are all too good at their job.

It's sad. And, it happens every year. Don't let it happen to you. Get all of your financial aid advice from your school counselor, college financial aid office, and reputable publications and websites.

There is no reason to pay any individual or organization to help you secure a scholarship or any form of financial aid. If you do, you will only be putting money in the pocket of a scammer.

At last, you have graduated from high school. You cannot help but celebrate your newfound independence both from your parents and teachers. We can now be considered matured individuals. Life is exciting! However, the feeling of euphoria quickly dissipates. What will you do for money? What can you do to have a continuous source of income? First, you can look for a job, or head for college.

Do You Have a Plan?

There are two ways to have a steady source of income. You can apply for a job or proceed to higher education - college! For me pursuing college education is the better choice because it will pave the way to further personal growth and more opportunities. When you are young, a job at the local hamburger joint could already be appealing, but when you reach 45, you would wish you could have done other things. Having a solid plan after high school graduate is advisable. If you plan to go to college, the first thing you do is scout around for a college and apply. As in all other researches, you can search for the names of top ranking colleges in the internet.

Before your high school graduation, it will help if you already have a plan standing by. If you have decided on college, then you should already have at least an idea of the college you want to go to and apply with them. The easiest way to do your search is through the internet. You will easily get the names of the leading colleges and universities there.

These schools are the epitome of success. Millions of high school graduates vi relentlessly for these top ranked colleges. The funny thing about these prestigious Universities is that many who graduate, magically have a job waiting right upon completion. Businesses and corporations all crave that next big graduate from M.I.T.

What Does a Highly Ranked University Require?

Getting accepted in these leading colleges is not easy. Serious preparation starts from high school. One of my lady classmates got accepted in Harvard University. She had a flawless GPA and numerous extra curricular activities. These leading colleges search for different virtues in applicants. This is one of their ways of screening through thousands of hopeful high school graduates.

If you are just finishing high school, or are in your senior year, you may want to check out many of the top ranked colleges in America. These are all available online. You can easily do a search for any college of your choice via the Internet. This way you will get an idea of cost and competition before actually applying. This is your future, so prepare yourself with one of the top ranked colleges.

by Jon Kline

In 2007-2008, tuition at private colleges averaged nearly $24,000 a year; public college tuition was about a quarter of that (for in-state students), and community college tuition cost most students a little under $2,500 annually.

In recent years, four-year college tuition has risen at about 6.2% a year, while two-year college costs have increased about 4.5% annually. In most instances, available aid has increased as well.

Some of that aid can probably be yours.

Approximately 67% of students receive federal aid. It comes in the form of grants and loans. The average student attending a two-year institution received more than $2,000 in such aid in 2007-2008. Student at four-year publics got about $3,600, and students attending four-year privates raked in, on average, $9,300 in federal aid.

The amount of federal grant aid and subsidized loans for which a student is eligible is determined by an analysis of the information provided on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which students must submit each year.

Other kinds of scholarships also require students to have a completed FAFSA, so be sure to get yours taken care of as quickly as you can.

Don't forget that college financial aid counselors stand ready to assist you. And there are dozens of great websites to help you as well.

Contrary to what you may have heard, completing the FAFSA can be done pretty quickly and easily. Just look at it to determine what information it requires, get the information together, and plug it into the form.

Although you can use a paper application, filling out the FAFSA online is far easier for lots of reasons. And, completing the FAFSA online makes it easier for you to track the process.

That's it. Forget about the horror stories you may have heard. Just complete your FAFSA carefully and on time and you'll have no problems at all.

Gaining a college education is a desired goal for many. However, not all individuals can afford to go to a higher education institution. The solution for these individuals comes in the form of college scholarships.

Scholarships for college provide the answer for those who due to their finances cannot pay for school. One can search various places for college scholarships however the best options can be obtained online.

Many people use the Internet on a daily basis so using it to search for college scholarships should be an easy task for most. The part which may give individuals trouble is knowing where to begin. Search engines provide a wonderful starting point.

Two popular search engines include Yahoo and Google. These provide wonderful means for finding the best college scholarships online. All you have to do is enter in keyword phrases like "college scholarship options" or "applying for college scholarships" and you will have immediate potential answers.

Once you have the results you then have to narrow down the choices. You can do so by picking out the most favorable ones akin with your desired education route.

You can also choose a scholarship by picking one from amongst those which have deadlines in the future. Some deadlines have already passed which make them ineligible for your selection process.

The amount you will receive via your college scholarship may also have a part in the decision process. You want to pick a scholarship which will not offer too little money for your efforts. Therefore, consider the maximum scholarship amount being offered with each college scholarship you find online.

Lastly, always keep in mind that to find the best college scholarship online you must ensure that the particular scholarship will be attainable. For example, if in order to qualify for a certain scholarship you must have a 3.5 GPA and you have a 2.8 GPA, then perhaps looking elsewhere for another scholarship is in your best interest.

Dozens or even hundreds of top students may be competing with you for major scholarships, so it is important to gain any edge possible. By carefully putting together your application packet, you can help give yourself that edge. Here's how.

1. Type everything if possible. If not, write in black ink so your materials can be photocopied easily by the scholarship selection committee.

2. When asked for references, get them from folks who know your academic potential and personal strengths. Letters from neighbors, family friends, etc. are not what most scholarship committees want.

3. Nobody wants to work harder than necessary, so make the scholarship judges' job easy by making sure all of your documents are well organized and readable.

4. Be sure to provide all requested information. Incomplete applications are often totally disregarded.

5. Submit the application well before the deadline. It creates a good impression.

6. Attach all documents together with a large paper clip. Do not use staples. Put everything in an attractive, well constructed folder.

7. Put the folder in a large, sturdy envelope so everything will look as good when it arrives as it does before you mail it.

There are no guarantees, but these seven very simple tips can help separate your scholarship application from some of those not as carefully assembled. And, every little edge you can get may make the difference for you. Best wishes.

It is no secret that attending college can be expensive.

by Mary Poodel

It is no secret that attending college can be expensive. Whether you have been saving up money to pay for your college tuition, or you have little money to put towards your education, it can be hard figuring out how you are going to pay your tuition bill each semester.

There are many resources available that can help with the pain of paying your college tuition. Some students choose to take out student loans each semester to cover their tuition bill. Unfortunately, they will have to pay back those loans after graduating from college. Good alternatives to loans are college scholarships.

College scholarships can be a great way to help with your college tuition bill because, unlike student loans, it is money that you will not have to pay back. The other great thing about college scholarships it that there are numerous scholarships available, increasing the likelihood that you will be chosen as the recipient of one or more.

While some college scholarships can be relatively easy to apply for, others have a more intense application process. For almost all scholarships, you will have to complete an application.

One way to increase your chances of being chosen as the recipient of a college scholarship is to thoroughly read the application before completing and submitting it. Most scholarships have stipulations on who can apply, so be sure that you meet all of the qualifications before taking the time to complete the application. Also, be sure that you fully answer each question in the application before submitting it.

If you are involved in any extracurricular activities, be sure to list them on your application. Scholarship reviewers like to see what accomplishments and awards you have received, so list all that you can think of on the application.

Be sure to vary your responses on each scholarship that you are applying for. The scholarship reviewers can easily spot a generic application letter and if they feel that yours is not unique, they probably won't award you the scholarship.

There are many things that set you apart from the other scholarship applicants, so take some time to think about what makes you unique. Once you have determined what sets you apart from the others, make sure to highlight this in your application letter. The people that review the applicants will be more likely to award the scholarship to someone that has made a point to set them self apart.

There are many different college types available to students these days such as smaller private schools and extremely large state-run institutions. When perusing your options, you may be unsure as to how you can choose the best one. The following will provide some tips for doing so.

The first thing you want to do when searching for a college is to figure out what attributes you are searching for in a school. Having a clear image in your head of what an ideal college will consist of will help to direct you in your search.

The specifics regarding the best college should start with the major you intend on pursuing throughout school. Certain colleges are known for specific majors, therefore you want to attend a school where your major will be highly touted.

Secondly, think of what extracurricular activities you will possibly engage in while at college. By having this factor in mind you can narrow down the options to the best school which offers these activities to its students.

The location of the school will also help to sway your decision. If you want to go far away from home, focus your search out of state. On the other hand, if you want a school within one or two hours from your family, narrow down the options that way.

Also consider the housing situation. Some students have to live on campus whereas others can live off campus. Check out the living quarters at the schools and see which ones look the best.

The ability of the professors should also be considered. Look into the different bios of the professors within your desired major and make sure that they are well educated in that area of study.

Lastly, ask about the cost for attending the colleges. Make sure that you inquire about housing, book costs and fees in addition to tuition. This will help to narrow down the options and aid you in picking the best college.

When all is going right, computers are the most amazing thing since sliced bread. When there is a problem, however, nothing is more frustrating for the average person to wait through. What good is a computer if it can go down and cripple an entire business for long periods of time?

With an increase in computer use in all types of businesses, there is an additional need for trained computer technicians to keep things in efficiently running order. That includes people who can provide phone help, handle preventive maintenance, troubleshoot, and replace subsystems such as hard drives and network cards (usually easier to replace than to repair).

Computer technician training prepares you for a career in this exploding field. You will learn the intricacies of computer anatomy, how to diagnose a problem using equipment such as voltmeters, circuit analyzers, signal generators, and oscilloscopes, how to make manual repairs, and how to install plug-ins, as well as how to listen to the computer user's verbal description of the problem for clues. All the tools you need to achieve a good score on the A+ Certification Exam, the industry-wide test for certifying computer technicians, are taught, including safety and security issues.

As long as there are frustrated, clueless people staring powerlessly at their disabled computer screens, there will be a serious need for computer technicians to come to the rescue. You could be that hero! If you want a career in a field you can be assured will only grow, computer technology and repair is your answer.

Summary: There are many different scholarships for women. Because of the high number of scholarships, women must narrow their choices down to a few suitable scholarships and be prepared to produce the necessary paperwork and materials for that scholarship.

There are so many scholarships available, the task of sorting through them can seem impossible. By understanding which scholarships one is most likely to win, one can narrow down the list considerably and make the task much simpler.

Quite often, you can find a breakdown of how much funding the college gives to its enrolled student population. Some colleges will even list the specific scholarships they sponsor. This allows you to discern whether or not they offer scholarships for women in particular, or just sponsor general academic and financial need based scholarships.

Finding a suitable scholarship requires narrowing down the field by sorting the options. First check with the school you will be attending for scholarships for women. Most colleges offer some scholarships for women and often have their rules posted on their websites. Check to see if your field has any scholarships available. It is not uncommon for different fields such as science and medicine to offer scholarships. If you are changing your calling in college, check with your scholarship details to see if you would lose the money or if other scholarships would open up for you.

Just because you do not have the best GPA does not mean there will be no scholarships available to assist you going to college. There are many scholarships that do not require a certain GPA. Many of these scholarships only require dedication, drive, and financial need. There are other scholarships that require a GPA, but also require that the student does a certain research project before the end of the school year.

Since most universities award scholarships automatically to accepted students, this means you will not have to complete an additional scholarship application, include additional letters of reference, or write another essay. While this may save you time, it will not save you money unless you are 100% certain that your college admissions application is as perfect as possible.

Since college sponsored scholarships don't require an additional application, a financial aid panel awards funds based on what they see in your admissions application. This means that your application is being judged twice: once by those who decide if you are accepted into the school, and again by those who decide whether to provide you with scholarship money. It is a good idea to check and recheck your admissions application before sending it, making sure that everything is in order and nothing is left out.

Applying to college can be an overwhelming process, and more often than not the people in your life want to be a part of this important step. Utilize everyone you can to ease the pressure off of yourself. Have your parents or guidance counselor proofread everything before you send it, just to look for errors with a fresh set of eyes. Recruit your English teacher for tips on writing your college admissions essay. Above all, remember that you are not alone in this process - which is, in and of itself, a double-edged sword. Many other high school seniors are going through this same procedure, which means that many other high school seniors will be competing for the same scholarships as you. Make your application stand above the rest.

Brief: There are many great scholarships for women available online. These scholarships are best accessed by scholarship search engines that are designed to match prospective students to the right scholarship.

Finances are the number one reason that women do not attend college as many wish they could. One option that could increase women's likelihood of attending college is the college scholarship. How does one find these scholarships?

Several scholarship search engines house databases filled with scholarships for women. For example, Scholarship Experts has more than 2.4 million scholarships valued at more than $14 billion. With the significant opportunities that exist, whether for your region, major, ethnicity, or religious affiliations, you can easily find scholarships for your college education.

FastWeb is another scholarship search engine that is updated frequently, ensuring that you have access to all the latest scholarships for women. As an added bonus, FastWeb allows you to apply online, which means less paperwork for your efforts.

Scholarship Monkey is another search engine that is fast and reliable. This search engine is all about matching students and their parents to the appropriate scholarships. This search engine also supports online applications.

With so many scholarships being available, finding the right one is very important. Broke Scholar has the solution to this problem. This search engine asks for a more detailed listing of information and contains a smaller scholarship pool. This allows the search engine to be more accurate than other search engines. This search engine also has a calendar so that the student can mark when each scholarship is due, and not miss any vital money.

While it is a shame to think that people would attempt to betray the trust of students, it does happen. One website that is attempting to prevent that from happening to their clients is Scholarships.com. This websites offers fraud protection and filters out the various phishing scholarships. There are even tips that one can use to avoid falling in to fraudulent offers elsewhere online.

By spending a few minutes completing questionnaires on internet scholarship databases, you will be immediately connected with several scholarships for women just like you.
